The system of selective secondary education in Kent means that children whose parents feel that they would benefit from a Grammar School education must sit a series of tests known as the 11 plus or Kent Tests. These are composed of:
Mathematics
Verbal reasoning
Non-verbal reasoning;
In addition, children write an essay which is assessed when borderline marks are achieved.
I specialise in preparing children for the Kent Test by:
- helping to fill in major "gaps" in maths,
- teaching strategies and skills for answering the type of questions that might appear,
- teaching precise strategies for answering the 5 types of NVR questions that are used in the Kent Test,
- teaching precise strategies for answering the 16 types of VR questions that are used in the Kent Test,
- giving practice in answering questions, gradually limiting the time allowed,
- providing complete papers to try just before the "real thing",
- providing guidance on what will be looked for in the written task.
- At all times I try to make the work FUN!
My speciality is to "give a boost" to "borderline" children and I achieve great success in that.
I do not, however, accept children for tuition where assessment scores suggest that they have no chance of passing the tests and would struggle in a selective school. This would be unfair to the child in terms of the pressure experienced over a long period, and the parents, whose money I am taking!!
